Training
The Summit Metro Crash Response Team represents literally thousands of hours of advanced training in its membership. Our officers have attended internationally recognized organizations such as the
Northwestern University Center for Public Safety, the
Institute of Police Technology and Management,
Ongoing training is essential in the fields surrounding Crash Investigations and SMcRT is committed to working with local, state and national resources to maintain and improve our knowledge and skill base. Check back for further updates on our training efforts.
July 2007 Training:
Held at the Adessa Auction yards, SMcRT staged several mock crash scenarios and response teams worked to document each scene and practice working together as a cohesive unit.
This training also marked the first time the SMcRT tested Total Station laser measuring against GPS based mapping for comparative ease of set up, use and accuracy of the finished product.
SMcRT investigators worked hard throughout the day sharing skills and insights as well as case studies to enhance our ongoing training efforts.
May 2008
Training is not just for our members, SMcRT is also committed to educating the public and when the Copley-Fairlawn School district requested a demonstration by the SMcRT for their pre-prom rally. Members of the SMcRT from Bath, Fairlawn, Macedonia, Norton, Silver Lake, Stow, Copley as well as the Stow Police Reserve Unit participated along with the Copley Fire and Police Departments in this staged event.
This demonstration was to show the results of reckless driving and to stress the serious responsibilites young drivers have to assure the safety of their passengers as well as other motorists.
The SMcRT was honored and privileged to be invited to participate in this educational opportunity for our youth.
April 2009 Training:
Combining classroom instruction with field experiments and demonstrations, the SMcRT partnered for the first time with the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy to present a formal training course on Motorcycle Crash Investigations.
SMcRT members and crash investigators from across Northeastern Ohio learned about the unique aspect of motorcycle operation and how those factors affect roadway evidence, rider strategies and the role of the investigator. The instructor for this class was Mr. Ron Thayer (OPOTA).
